Tea serve ( fon-cha ) project (2017)
participatory installation
Free tea is often prepared to serve visitors in some public places in
Taiwan, such as temples and rest areas along mountain trails. The act of
offering tea is called “fon-cha,” or serving tea for visitors, and it is often
regarded as an act of accumulating charitable fortune in our culture. Thus, I focused on the notion of ‘tea together,’ combining the interactive tea wares with the culture of serving tea to create a participatory artwork, mediating the relations between people and orientating their bodies.
In this project, tea was served during the exhibition in the form of a tea vendor with some instructions that participants should follow. Because the interactive tea set is designed for two or three people in a
group, participants should try to help each other or perhaps even figure
out how to drink the tea properly so that the process of drinking tea
could be smoother. ‘Tea together’ encourages people to imagine new ways of forging connections through the act of drinking together.
