Born in Taichung, Taiwan in 1995, Yinchen received her BFA from Taipei National University of the Arts in 2019 and completed her MA in Ceramic Arts at Kyoto City University of Arts in 2024, including an exchange term in the MRes program at the Royal College of Art, UK.
Yinchen Li’s practice spans ceramics, painting, and installation. Her work explores the fluidity of the mind, materials, and interpersonal relationships, often focusing on objects in hybrid states. Through her artworks, she reflects on her interactions with the world and investigates the potential dialogues between painting and ceramic media.
Li blends clay and glaze into a slurry-like substance, using the transformation from clay to glaze as a material narrative. The tension and displacement arising during the firing process act as catalysts in her material narrative, embodying themes of convergence, misalignment, and rupture in both relational and material interactions.
By utilizing the liquidity of the slurry, she interprets the experience of drawing that hovers between perception and materiality. Through the removal of the base layer in the firing process, she accentuates the material traces of painterly gestures, creating surfaces that are delicate, translucent, and fragile—resembling ephemeral, landscape-like scenes.
